Special Programs
Through a variety of effective programs, we support those who wish to remain independent and in their own homes as long as possible and support those who wish to “age in place,” in the environment where they feel most at home. We also offer them special programs to keep them connected and demonstrate that others care about their well-being.
Our staff is trained to lend a hand to elders who struggle with the complex challenges and changes that affect our friends.
- Our monthly Food Bag Delivery Program provides elders who are most in need of supplemental nutritious food from our award-winning Food Pantry.
- Our licensed Social Worker provides information and support to the staff and volunteers. When necessary, an assessment of the elder provides professional guidance with difficult decisions.
- Unusually hot or bitter cold days trigger Weather Emergency services that make sure our Old Friends are comfortable and safe. When necessary, we install donated air conditioners or fans in the homes of those in need.
- We also provide Direct Services such as running errands, providing transportation to appointments, and helping our elders with small household tasks, including teaching them to operate a new appliance.
- Our Social Clubs such as the Book Club and Art Club are monthly interactive cultural gatherings that engage both elders and volunteers who enjoy similar interests.

"...Volunteering with LBFE I can visit elders in my area. The home office is not too far from my home. I choose where and who I visit.”
Elinah Achusim, Implementation Specialist
“LBFE Chicago is my second family. I called in 1991 to volunteer. The staff person was so pleasant and welcoming when she recruited me to drive. The rest is history. It is one the best aspects of my life.”
Kay M. Leane, Executive
